Oh no, it looks like the space race has begun And no one ever said that this trip would be fun And oh, Joe, if you said that it was the truth I would have stayed to take off my shoes The Santa Cruz sunset looks a lot like rain And Carlos has landed in the drunk tank again Feeling a little weary around other people's friends Thinking that this weekend never should end Out on the beach there's a girl or two They got a look saying watching you wanna do? And if I told myself the truth We'd be back at her place, taking off our shoes The snow if falling down all over Reno There's free ten dollar beers in every Casino I could take Highway 80 west to Sacramento But I'd probably just stop by the side of the road I know there's a promise out on that road But first I gotta get up and go And if I told myself the truth I'd leave this town, go and earn myself some shoes After what she told me things were looking up I believed in her, but who I could I trust? People trying to tell me what I should be dreaming of And all they ever said is that it was gonna be tough And all they ever told me is that I wouldn't have enough Well know I gotta tell them that they're S.O.L.

CHORUS If you smoke too much you can't get stoned You're gonna spend all your time feeling lonely when your never alone Sometimes you feel like you can't do no good And when it comes time for a change it's always "I would if I could" Vs. 1 Well no one here is asking for my opinion And no one here is asking for my advice But I've had a few too many The room is dark not spinning And I think I may have just stepped out of my mind They closed my tab and said "Quit yer hollerin' Please, sir, won't you follow me to the door? We got your name on a list And it's a name we won't soon forget So we'd be obliged if you don't show your face here anymore" CHORUS Vs. 2 "Well I've been raised on openness and understanding You can tell by all of these books that I've read That's why can't possible comprehend All the people and places I've been I'm the epitome of erudite and educated" My daddy had a saying all about opinions But it shouldn't be repeated in polite company I'll just keep talking in folks ears Just waiting and hoping to hear The slightest bit of interest or sympathy CHORUS (repeat)
